WHEN FRIENDS LEAVE, CAN CHILDREN COPE WITH IT?

When children become close to their friends at school and Day Care and if one or two in the group leave due to parents relocating or due to some other reasons, how do they cope? Does this affect them, if so, how do we deal with it?

Yes it does affect them; some do show it and express their feelings to adults but some do not know how to make it known to the seniors around. Because of this sometimes, they can have behavioral problems of being moody or withdrawn in class, not concentrating on work etc.

In such a situation, we have to be extremely understanding and spend time talking to the child about the process of

‘moving or leaving’ and how it is a natural one; telling them stories related to the situation can help in much younger child.

Organizing ‘send off parties’, and talking about meeting in the future can give their friendship renewed hope and excitement.
